Giving Up a License Voluntarily
A person licensed to practice in an occupation or profession may voluntarily give up or surrender his or her license to the practice's board while the board investigates a possible violation. Once one voluntarily relinquishes his authorization to practice, the board must reinstate the license before the person who surrendered the license may practice again. Practicing before the board reinstates the surrendered license, however, is considered illegal and subject to penalties.
Note, the board cannot consider the surrender of the license an admission of guilt. At the same time, giving up the license does not mean that the board may not proceed with taking disciplinary action against the licensee upon a proof or finding of a violation.
